Apr. 7, 2008 - Seal Pup Slaughter Must be Brought to End

A series of protests occurred throughout Europe in support of the ban on seal fur trade. Opposition was fueled by a recent Russian permission to kill 30,000 seals in the White Sea. The Norwegian company "GC Rieber Skinn AS," which received the quota, seeks to increase the number to 100,000. An individual adult seal is considered equal to 2.5 pups, which are more desirable since their white fur is of higher value in the fur market. These seals are killed in a cruel way in order to prevent the skins from damage.

Lithuanian protests joined in on this European action on the 11th of April in front of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius. ANIMAL RIGHTS LITHUANIA activists imitated the laundry of blood-soaked furs. The participants also addressed the Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in a note delivered to the Embassy urging the violent hunt to stop.
